Summary:

Really, if it hadn’t been for the damn baby, Gong Ji would’ve gotten away with it.

A goat thief encounters a widowed master swordmaker and the man’s infant. Somehow, he never manages to leave.

My review: This is so lovely, it’s hard to fully express my adoration for this story. Yet for all it’s about two men drawn together by their mutual love of a small, motherless child – and there is immense amounts of cuteness in this story – it’s not remotely sappy or silly. Gong Ji manages to be tough and rough and always hard as nails, while being putty in the hands of his tiny overlord. Din, the father and grieving widower, is sorrowful and restrained and so unable to cope with his pain, and it takes Gong Ji basically crashing into his life and staying there before Din can learn to deal with his loss.

The writing is lovely, the historical background well-told and never overwhelming. Satisfying, not slightly cloying, and free to read from the wonderful Shousetsu Bang*Bang ezine. What more do you want?
